THE HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT PROCESS

This process follows a 4-step procedure recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). This process is applicable to evaluating a wide variety of environmental problems.

The 4 steps are:

data evaluation
exposure assessment
toxicity assessment
risk characterization.

Data Evaluation

During this phase of the process, technically knowledgeable personnel collect and compile relevant analytical data. They analyze this data to determine its quality and usefulness. They also determine chemicals and factors that are representative of the conditions to be encountered in the field. In particular, for evaluation of subsurface pollution problems they estimate the concentrations of chemicals that represent current and future conditions.

Exposure Assessment

The assessment phase identifies actual or potential chemical releases, actual or potential populations subject to exposure and actual or potential exposure paths. Appropriate analytical methods are applied to the data to determine concentrations at potential points of human exposure. Estimates of chemical intakes are prepared.

Toxicity Assessment

Using a summary of the quantitative and qualitative toxicity data for each chemical of potential concern, appropriate guidance levels are prepared that characterize the risks identified.
