POLLUTION PREVENTION AND WASTE MINIMIZATION

Pollution prevention and waste minimization follows a standard but flexible set of guidelines. The evaluator identifies processes in a system (such as a manufacturing facility) which might lead to increased pollution prevention and/or waste minimization. The evaluator meets with key operations personnel and asks the following broad questions for each process:

The evaluator meets with key operations personnel and asks the following broad questions for each process:

1. How do you perform the process?
2. Would you like to improve the process?
3. Would you like to improve the process in the following areas?

a. environmental compliance
b. safety and health of workers
c. productivity
d. cost

4. What are the possible ways to achieve improvements?
5. How does the existing equipment work?
6. How efficient is the existing equipment?
7. How will revisions in the use of the equipment save money?
8. Can new or emerging technology improve the process?
9. How can this new technology reduce or eliminate pollution?
10. Which areas of the process will benefit most from changes?
11. How can the selected technology be implemented?
12. How much money will the changes save?
13. How long is the payback period?
14. How much capital investment is required?

Following a thorough evaluation of the process, the evaluator and key operations personnel build a presentation for management. This presentation will show the actions that can be taken to improve the process to meet environmental compliance, safety, efficiency, and cost objectives.

This method can be applied to a broad range of processes. It allows rational planning for investment in pollution control. Here are some examples:

  • Disposal of fluorescent light bulbs

  • Disposal of photographic materials

  • Disposal of cleaning materials and solvents

  • Use of paints

  • Disposal of filters

  • Disposal of antifreeze

  • Disposal of Aerosol cans

  • Use of HALON 1301

  • Removal of corrosion from metals

  • Disposal of waste gasoline, oil or hydraulic fluids

  • Cleaning with solvents

Our personnel would like to assist you with your pollution control and waste minimization efforts. Our team can provide a wide range of personnel with a broad range of technical knowledge. Let us know how we can help you.
